Through the Institutional Program of Internationalization (PrInt-UFSC of CAPES) the Postgraduate Program in Plant Genetic Resources (RGV-UFSC) offered two courses with in-person tuition ensuring all sanitary precautions at the Ressacada Experimental Farm of UFSC, Tapera, Florianópolis (fazenda.ufsc.br/localizacao).

  • The courses were offered as in-person classes, providing special epidemiological safety precautions including proof of full Covid vaccination of all participants, efficient room ventilation in ample classrooms during the parts of classes held inside, mask mandate, spacing among participants, sanitary disinfectant available throughout.
  • The course was performed in English with ongoing support in Spanish, English and/or Portuguese. Fluency in English required as a condition of enrollment.
  • Please complete as soon as possible the short questionnaire linked below for each course you intend to participate in, to enable better adaptation of the timetable, logistics, content to the participants’ profile. However, this does not replace the need to formally enroll via the secretary of your own postgraduate program at the latest until the Friday before the start of the course (or directly with the RGV secretary, if you are not currently enrolled as a regular postgraduate student).

Course A: Statistical analyses and graphics for structured data and flexible distributions in R

  • Block course 6th-10th Dec 2021 (Mon to Fri) 08h00-11h30 covering a total of 15h in-person classes (1 credit). Prerequisites, timetable, bibliography and further details are available in the Course Syllabus (not updated after program approval). All updated information available in Course A: Read-me.

  • Target audience: Postgraduate students and researchers of the agricultural, environmental, biological and related sciences, as well as teaching and technical staff, with prior experience of applying basic statistics in R, e.g., regressions, ANOVA, etc.
  • Prepare yourself before the course:
    • Ten simple steps of ~7h video-classes+tutorials in Portuguese to acquire the pre-requisites of the course.
    • Participants should bring their own computer with R and RStudio preinstalled and working. Whoever wants to analyze their own results during this course (recommended!) should organize their data in a tidy and consistent manner as shown in the respective step of the preparatory videoclasses.

Course B: Analysis and visualization of ecological niches in plant succession and agroforestry

  • Block course 13th-17th Dec 2021 (Mon to Fri) 13h30-17h30, covering a total of 15h in-person classes (1 credit). Please check the CONTINUOUSLY UPDATED TIMETABLE, as well as prerequisites, bibliography and further details are available in the Course Syllabus (not updated after program approval).
  • Target audience: Postgraduate students and researchers of the agricultural, environmental, biological and related sciences, as well as agricultural, forestry or conservation practitioners, policy makers and visual communicators interested in productive ecological restoration and conservation through sustainable use of biodiversity.
  • Preparation before the course: Study of the Basic Bibliography and basic concepts therein to be able to engage actively and creatively in the course. Participants are encouraged (but not obliged) to bring to every class a laptop computer with relevant software preinstalled and working (e.g., para visualização de dados, design, other graphics, illustration, and others), and/or materials for design on paper, in accordance with their particular interests in ecological niche modeling and visualization.
